Mark Fried founded Spirit Music in 1995, with the goal of building a leading independent publishing company devoted to aggressive royalty collection, proactive music promotion and unparalleled client service. Over the last decade-and-a-half, he has assembled a world-class staff, earned the trust of a diverse mix of some of the world’s most talented songwriters and other copyright owners and works daily to expand the boundaries of traditional music publishing.
Mark began his professional career in 1984 as a key player in the successful launch of music monthly Spin Magazine, overseeing a groundbreaking marketing campaign that established the magazine’s unique voice and won a committed readership. Wanting to be closer to music and the people who make it, he segued in 1985 to BMI, where he became a key executive in Writer/Publisher Relations, working with thousands of songwriters and presiding over a repertoire of two million songs. In 10 years with the Performing Rights organization, Mark played a pivotal role in transforming the company’s New York office into a vital player in the process of artist discovery and development, expanded its royalty tracking and distribution systems and introduced initiatives to better serve veteran songwriters, ensuring the continued value of their catalogs and legacies.
