Spirit Music Group was formed in 1995 for the express purpose of working with established songwriters and writer/artists in aggressively administering and actively promoting their songs.
It was the view of founder Mark Fried - who brought 15 years music business experience to the company including a long tenure as senior executive at BMI, representing a catalog of 2 million songs - that several decades of conglomerate publishing had left songwriters without a key resource dedicated to both the focused marketing of their songs and the aggressive collection of their royalties. He set out to create a haven for veteran songwriters and promising newcomers in all genres, where mentorship would be encouraged, information shared and careers aggressively developed. The New York-based staff, drawn from among the most talented young executives in the business today, boast a diverse background in music publishing, record company A&R, artist development, publicity and management, copyright administration and auditing, offering our writers a complete line of related services.
The company is now the fastest growing independent music publisher of the last decade, representing hundreds of hits and thousands of titles from the standards of Frank Sinatra and Billie Holliday to the pioneering rock of Elvis Presley, Chubby Checker and Dion; from the seminal blues of Elmore James and Lightnin' Hopkins to the envelope-pushing jazz of Charles Mingus; from the classic rock of T.Rex and Free to the southern rock of the Marshall Tucker Band and country crossovers by the Oak Ridge Boys and Dolly Parton; from the timeless soul of Roberta Flack to the world class reggae of Bob Marley to the influential work of Lou Reed and the Grateful Dead; from the classic 80's rock of the Go-Go's, Alice Cooper, Naked Eyes and Billy Squier to the groundbreaking rap of UTFO, Young MC and Tone Loc and massive pop hits by Madonna, Mariah Carey, Janet Jackson and Usher. Spirit Music's catalog reflects more than 700 charted hit songs.
The company's active songwriters and composers represent a who's who of popular music, including such well known names as R&B great Chaka Khan, punk godfather Lou Reed, African vocalist Angelique Kidjo, blues harpist Charlie Musselwhite and rap pioneer Kangol. In addition, the company has pacted with scores of cutting edge writers throughout America's music centers, including Rick Nowels (Dido, Jewel), Allan Rich (James Ingram, Kristine W), Peter Rafelson (Madonna, the Corrs), Nyticka Hemingway (Usher), D/R Period (Cam'ron, Queen Latifah) and composers Teddy Shapiro (Dreamwork's Tropic Thunder, Fox's The Devil Wears Prada), and A.J. Gundell (All My Children), as well as such buzzing artists as New York's MGMT, Scissor Sisters and Ambulance, Ltd.,, L.A.'s Drake Bell, the U.K.'s The Blood Arm, France's Justice and Manu Chao, South Africa's James Stewart, Scotland's Aberfeldy and Norway's Ephemera.
