Lew Spence was a renowned West Coast songwriter and composer whose career spanned decades, leaving an indelible mark on the music world. Best known for his long-standing collaborations with Alan and Marilyn Bergman, Spence crafted songs for some of the greatest vocalists of the 1950s and 1960s. His partnership with the Bergmans helped define the era’s music, with Spence contributing a vast catalog of timeless songs.

One of Spence’s most iconic contributions was his work with Frank Sinatra. As one of Sinatra’s biggest fans, Spence penned several classics for the legendary crooner, including the unforgettable “Nice ‘N’ Easy.” In addition, he wrote “Half As Lovely,” “If I Had Three Wishes,” “Love Looks So Well On You,” “Sleep Warm,” and “So Long My Love,” all of which became integral parts of Sinatra’s repertoire.

Spence’s songwriting talents were not limited to Sinatra. He also wrote hits for Dean Martin, including “Off Again, On Again” and “Outta My Mind,” as well as beautiful songs for Johnny Mathis, such as “Magic Garden” and “Live It Up.” His music resonated deeply with legendary female vocalists too, with Barbara Streisand recording “That Face” and Peggy Lee cutting tracks like “That’s Him Over There” and “I’ve Never Been So Happy In Love.”

Spence’s work continues to be celebrated, with “Nice ‘N’ Easy” appearing in two Broadway musicals: the acclaimed *Fela!* and Twyla Tharp’s *Come Fly Away.* Recently, his songs have found their way into popular films and TV shows, including *Package Deal* and CBS’s *The Defenders*, proving that his music remains as relevant today as ever.
