Loon
When Puff Daddy rebranded himself as P. Diddy and revived his iconic Bad Boy Records label in 2001, the move marked the beginning of a new era. As part of this fresh chapter, Diddy introduced Loon to the spotlight. Loon quickly made an impact, featuring prominently on Diddy’s hit single “I Need a Girl, Pt. 2” in 2002. The track became an instant favorite and reached the top of the charts, solidifying Loon’s presence in the mainstream hip-hop scene.
It took another year and a half before Loon was given the opportunity for a solo release. In late 2003, Bad Boy dropped his self-titled album, which was led by the single “How You Want That,” featuring the hook by Kelis. The song aimed to present Loon as a smooth and charismatic rapper, drawing comparisons to Mase, the former Bad Boy artist known for his laid-back style and success. However, despite high expectations, Loon’s solo album did not receive the same level of fervor and commercial success as Mase’s projects from the late ’90s.
Though Loon’s time in the spotlight was relatively brief, his contribution to the Bad Boy roster, particularly his role on “I Need a Girl, Pt. 2,” left an indelible mark. While his solo career didn’t reach the heights of some of his peers, Loon remains an important figure in the early 2000s hip-hop scene, remembered for his smooth style and association with one of the most influential labels in music history.
